Smores

Smores are one of the classic summer treats. They bring up fun memories of camping and campfires with roasted marshmallows and hot dogs. Smores have been a classic camping treat for yars and the first recipe for them dates all the way back to 1927 and was recorded in a girl scout handbook. Since that time (and probably before as well) smores have been very popular and it’s simple not the same if you go camping without them. The name is a contraction of the original name which was listed as “Some Mores” in girl scouts books up until 1971 with various recipes explaining how to make them.

Traditional smores usually consist of a marshmallow that has been toasted over a campfire and then wedged between two graham crackers, one of which has a piece of chocolate on it. The idea is that the hot marshmallow will melt the chocolate and sort of glue the two graham crackers to each other to form a sandwich. Some people however have begun to use metallic skewers to prepare and roast the entire smore at the same time in order to increase the amount of melted chocolate. There have even been devices invented to do this so that you would be less likely to lose your smore into the campfire on accident.

It’s also common for people to make them in the microwave although this is generally considered to not be as much fun or as tasty as doing them over a campfire. With the microwave you do get more melted chocolate and the graham cracker does soften a bit but some people find that they don’t like that and that the taste isn't the same. It’s also hard to duplicate the effect of having a toasted marshmallow with that smoky flavoring a campfire gives it.

There are lots of ways that you can spice up and change your smores too if you want to and many people have come up with unique methods and ways of redesigning their smores. One of the most basic ways to change up a smore is to simply use different ingredients. Some people will use different kinds of chocolate such as white or extra dark chocolate, others will use flavored marshmallows or graham crackers that have been dipped in chocolate already to change things up. Some people also like to add extra things to their smores like candy. Peanut butter and peanut butter cups are very common additions to smores and add a unique and fun flavor. Other people will add peanuts, m&m’s, pieces of candy bars (often times inserting these into the marshmallows to be certain that they melt and don’t fall out of the smore) to add fun flavors to their smores. Some people will even drizzle caramel or chocolate sauce on top of them just to be thorough and it’s common for them to be served with ice cream as well.

Overall smores are a very fun and tasty treat - one that you certainly wouldn’t want to be without on your next camping trip so make sure to bring your ingredients with you and have fun making them!
